PSD customers donate pop tabs for RMHC of Coastal Empire

Hilton Head PSD customers have a tradition of collecting Pop Tabs for the Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) of the Coastal Empire in Savannah, Ga. The program started around 2016 when Commissioner Patti Soltys of PSD Voting District 3 joined the PSD Commission. Soltys had been involved in RMHC and asked if the PSD’s drive-through window and Customer Service lobby at 21 Oak Park Drive could be a Pop Tabs drop-off location. Soltys and other volunteers deliver the Pop Tabs to RMHC of the Coastal Empire in Savannah. The charity says their overall Pop Tab program generates about $6,000 each year. About 1,200 Pop Tabs equal one pound, and RMHC earns $0.40 to $0.60 per pound of Pop Tabs.

“No family should have to deal with their child’s medical crisis alone,” said RMHC of the Coastal Empire CEO Billy Sorochak. “For hospitalized kids and their families, it will be the most important House they will ever visit. RMHC helps families of seriously ill, hospitalized children cope with the stress and expense of daily living while trying to be close and emotionally strong for their child. We provide for every child’s illness and injury and serve all children from newborn to 22 years of age and their families. ‘Keeping Families Close’ is the true spirit of our mission.”

RMHC of the Coastal Empire’s Savannah House is located just steps from the Dwaine & Cynthia Willett Children’s Hospital of Savannah. The charity also serves St. Joseph’s/Candler Hospital and all area medical facilities serving the Coastal Empire.

“The customers of the PSD are very caring people and have stepped up to collect for those kids in need and their families,” said Soltys. “Together we are making a difference. From the bottom or our hearts, thank you so much!”

The PSD’s drive-through window and Customer Service lobby at 21 Oak Park Drive off Mathews Drive are open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Please drop off Pop Tabs in a sealable plastic bag.
