Hilton Head PSD’s Aquifer Storage & Recovery (ASR) well is performing above expectations, according to an independent review of the well’s first full year of operations. The ASR well stores treated water in the 600-foot-deept brackish Middle Floridan Aquifer during the winter months of low demand and a less expensive wholesale water rate, and withdraws 2 million gallons of water a day during the summer months of higher demand and a more expensive wholesale rate. The well is located in Hilton Head Plantation.
“The (Middle Floridan Aquifer) at this site is an excellent drinking water storage reservoir. ASR well performance is better than expected,” wrote engineer David Pyne of ASR Systems in a report submitted to the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control. Pyne noted that the chloride level of water withdrawn from the well is lower than what it was expected to be, which is evidence that the ASR system is optimally located and is performing very effectively.
Pyne, an international expert on ASR systems, also noted that the PSD’s “data collection and reporting for this ASR program has been outstanding, providing an excellent data set to facilitate analysis and improve understanding of the local hydrogeology … and water quality response.”
