HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC – The Hilton Head Public Service District (PSD) has retained its designation as a “Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary” through the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program (ACSP), an Audubon International program.
Participation is designed to help property managers plan, organize, implement, and document a comprehensive environmental management program and receive recognition for their efforts. To reach certification, a property must demonstrate that they are maintaining a high degree of environmental quality in a number of areas including: Environmental Planning, Wildlife & Habitat Management, Outreach and Education, Water, and Resource Management. Hilton Head Public Service District was designated as a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary in 2019. After designation, properties go through a recertification process every three years.
“Hilton Head Public Service District has shown a strong commitment to its environmental program. They are to be commended for their efforts to provide a sanctuary for wildlife,” said Christine Kane, CEO at Audubon International. “The Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program benefits both people and wildlife,” said Kane. “It’s a great way for businesses and environmental organizations to work together to become better stewards of the land and natural resources.”
PSD General Manager Pete Nardi said the ACSP designation demonstrates the PSD’s commitment to environmental leadership. “The PSD is one of the leading environmental organizations in our community,” Nardi said. “We try to lead by example when it comes to the stewardship of our island’s resources and ecology, from our recycled water program that annually recycles a billion gallons of highly treated wastewater into beneficial reuse water for wetlands nourishment and golf irrigation, to our ongoing promotion of water efficient practices and programs for our customers.”
By participating in the ACSP, Hilton Head Public Service District has been involved in projects that enhance habitat for wildlife and preserve natural resources for the benefit of the local community. These projects include: promoting water conservation, public safety education, and energy efficiency.
Hilton Head PSD is the public water, sewer, wastewater treatment, and recycled water utility serving more than 25,000 customers in the north- and mid-island areas of Hilton Head Island. For more information, please visit www.hhpsd.com or email [email protected].
