HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (February 23, 2016) – Hilton Head Public Service District’s (PSD) water distribution system was found to be lead-free after testing performed in 2015, the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control and an independent lab have confirmed.
The PSD performed lead and copper monitoring at multiple sites in our water system between June and September 2015, per the U.S. EPA’s lead monitoring requirements. There are no lead pipes in the PSD’s water distribution and no known lead piping in customers’ homes in the PSD’s service area.
Lead does not come from utilities’ water treatment or distribution mains – it comes from lead service lines running between the water main in the street and the home, and from plumbing inside the home. In our community, we do not have lead service lines in our system.
Customers who would like to have their home’s plumbing tested for lead can contact the PSD and we will assist you in finding a lab to test your home’s water for lead.
